Freccero is one of the most admired Dante critics alive today, and although he has been reluctant to publish in book form, his essays have been essential reading for several generations of scholars. Freccero´s writing is lucid and witty -- his Introduction to Robert Pinsky´s translation of the Inferno is a classic of the genre -- but is also informed by an encyclopedic knowledge of Dante´s influence and of subsequent Dante criticism. Freccero has mastered many decades worth of theory, but wears it lightly, and writes with both eyes firmly on the texts at hand.
